Green Hills AEA Summer Learning Spotlight



Course Spotlights:

Substitute Authorization - Course #154170
  1. May 18, June 1 in Red Oak
  2. July 8, July 9, July 10 in Council Bluffs
Participants will be able to: describe the Board of Educational Examiner's (BOEE) Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics; demonstrate classroom management skills; examine diversity in the classroom; and apply a variety of learning strategies to lesson plan development.

A substitute authorization allows an individual to substitute in grades PK-12 for no more than 5 consecutive days and no more than 10 days in a 30-day period in one job assignment for a regularly assigned teacher who is absent, except in the driver’s education classroom.

Introduction to Iowa Core Social Studies

Participants will: review year one professional development and begin to learn how to put the standards together into coherent unit plans following an inquiry storyline; learn about good unit design, how to unpack and bundle standards and create compelling and supporting questions in order to create aligned and coherent units. Resources will also be shared that support the second year of implementation of new standards. This course supports the implementation of the Iowa Core Social Studies Standards. This is year two of a three-year state rollout plan to help teachers, coaches and administrators develop robust coherent Social Studies units that align with the standards.


Phonological Awareness and Word Recognition - Course #154192

This course is designed to help participants develop an understanding of a comprehensive program to develop phonemic awareness and fluent word recognition.

Note - Materials Needed!  This course will be using the book "Equipped for Reading Success" by David Kilpatrick. Purchase of this book is required for attendance in the class. This book can be purchased at the website.

Developing a Mindful Classroom - Course #154153
  1. June 3, June 4 in Council Bluffs
Participants will: 1. Learn the principles of mindful practices and how they can be applied to the classroom. 2. Design and implement a lesson utilizing mindfulness strategies as well as have opportunities to learn and develop a personal mindful practice.

Note - Materials Needed! This course will be using the book Cultivating Mindfulness in the Classroom. Iberlin, Jeanie M. Bloomington, Indiana: Marzona Publishing, 2017. Purchase of this book is required for attendance in the class.

CPI Initial Training - Course #154210
  1. May 2 in Avoca
  2. May 29 in Creston
  3. June 4 in Creston
An introdution to early intervention and non-physical methods for preventing or managing disruptive behavior. Personal safety techniques, restraint positions, and team strategies are addressed. Participants will receive a one year certifcation from CPI. This is the basic course for beginniners or for those who have not kept their certification up to date.
