NEW Transition Team Clickable Classroom

Our great GHAEA transition team (Mary McLaren, Samantha Wilson, Amy Liddell, Rebecca Hamilton, Nancy Lindgren) presented recently at the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) Work-Based Learning Conference. They did a great job of presenting and sharing with colleagues not only in Iowa but from around the country. The team was sharing a collection of transition resources that they had compiled and created in a clickable classroom format. This excellent resource now lives on our Green Hills AEA website and provides resources in the categories of assessments, curriculum/instruction, family/educator resources, resource linkages, and social-emotional learning. You can click here to see the classroom directly, and also know that it is linked to the GHAEA transition page. If you work with transition-aged students, ages 13 and up, please check out this classroom and add it to your toolbox!

Professional Learning COVID-19 Update

Effective immediately, our professional learning opportunities will resume full capacity registration and use of the agency’s conference rooms. GHAEA encourages you to take measures you believe best to protect yourself and those with whom you come in contact from the spread of COVID-19.

We will continue to clean all offices regularly, and we will reassess the need for routine, deep-cleaning efforts on June 30.

We will continue to update and track COVID-19 data for each county through June 30, as we will want to keep an eye on a possible resurgence of cases. If a county were to move into RED/RED status, we would verify with CDC on recommendations for office status at that time.

Principal Impact: Theory to Practice (Hybrid)

A school administrator plays a critical role in the overall success of a school. While the importance
of teachers should never be understated, it is the school leader who ultimately sets and sustains the
structures for teaching and learning within the building. Green Hills AEA, in partnership with Insight Education, will offer a learning experience that is a facilitated collaboration around professional problems of instructional practice.

Consortium for Accelerating Learning - Course #201281 (Hybrid)

Green Hills AEA and The New Teacher Project (TNTP) have developed a Consortium for Accelerating Learning based on the tenets of The Opportunity Myth. The Consortium for Accelerating Learning takes a new approach to ensuring that all students have access to grade-level content rather than receiving continual remediation. Join us for kickoff on August 11th to engage in thinking about 2 key questions: How do we ensure that students’ experience will lead to accelerated learning for all? What are our goals for accelerating student learning for all students?

Throughout the initiative, our AEA Consultants will work with school teams during the 21-22 school year to assist in using tools and data to develop a strong universal tier, or core instruction strategies, for teachers and students. Please refer to this flyer for all the details.

We welcome any questions you may have and invite you to join us for an informational webinar on April 14th from 3:00-4:00 pm. Please indicate your interest in attending the webinar via this SHORT form.

Watch for even more! Green Hills will also offer micro-credentialing opportunities for educators in your schools that will help your entire staff acquire more tools and resources to accelerate learning.

Family Educator Partnership Resource

The Family and Educator Partnership would like to share the resource: Special Education: Child Find Process. Developed for parents, it describes the process used to determine if a child needs special education services and supports. Each section provides parents questions they may wish to ask, such as:
  • What are Child Find activities?
  • What is my part in this process?
  • What will this look like?
  • How long does this process take?
  • What interventions will be used?
  • How will we know if the intervention works?
  • What happens if my child is found eligible?
  • What happens if my child is not found eligible?

By providing the right questions to ask, families become more actively engaged and collaborative throughout this process. You will find this easy to read and very helpful to both families and staff. If you have any questions, please contact Amy Liddell

Iowa Clearinghouse for Work-Based Learning Continues to Update & Expand

We have District Project Boards

We are excited to share a new function recently added to the Clearinghouse. Drum roll, please….say hello to District Project Boards!

Some schools/teachers are growing their authentic project work and want to have their own local project board but don't have an interactive place to store them. We've updated the Clearinghouse so that projects can be added and tagged to a particular district. These will then show up only on that particular District Board. The District Board can be selected in the dropdown and has its own URL, making for quick bookmarking, adding to Google Classroom or LMS, or pasting into an email or newsletter. This allows for easy communication with students, businesses, families, and the community to share what projects are available.

For more information, here is a short video. And check out North Fayette Valley's District page as our first pilot of this feature. Remember this is at no cost to you or the districts. All educators have free access to the Clearinghouse for WBL by using their single sign-on AEA credentials (use the email/password you have used for other AEA training, such as bloodborne pathogen training).

Here's a Strategic Marketing Challenge

Here’s a chance for your students to hear directly from business professionals, then take that information and engage in either (or both) marketing projects. Students can submit their finished products to be shared on the clearinghouse, reviewed by a panel of judges, oh - and there are standards connections already laid out, along with a possible assessment tool!

Check out the full information here to get registered for the free strategic marketing strategies event, “Game Plans that Matter: Strategic Marketing,” on March 22 (you can view the archived version if the day/time doesn't work for you). Afterward, check out these two projects, one on video creation and one on logo and branding, that will be part of a statewide challenge.

Note: This could be an exciting project opportunity that could also work for the teacher mini-grants that we’ve shared about previously and are ending at the end of March. Full details here.

Mental Health Website Promotional Materials Available

Iowa's AEA Well-being Team has created calming coloring books for middle school-aged children. If you would like to order some for your classroom, please fill this form out before March 12th. They will be van mailed to educators free-of-charge.

In addition to AEA mental health contacts for the schools, the site provides contacts for the home setting from Iowa’s Mental Health and Disability Services (MHDS).

The website features vetted sources to educate visitors about addiction and substance abuse; anxiety and stress disorders; attention deficit disorder; depression; eating disorders; and self-harm.

Website Designed to Help Iowans with Mental Health Needs

Mental health professionals from Iowa’s nine AEAs recently collaborated to create a website for Iowans who are searching for mental health assistance. The website at www.IowaAEAMentalHealth.org came from a request by the state legislature to help educators, parents, and students navigate resources related to mental health and well-being in Iowa. In addition to AEA contacts for the schools, the site provides contacts for the home setting from Iowa’s Mental Health and Disability Services (MHDS).

The website features vetted sources to educate visitors about addiction and substance abuse; anxiety and stress disorders; attention deficit disorder; depression; eating disorders; and self-harm.

“A call was put out by educational committee legislators last year to offer support to Iowa families and educators in the area of mental health,” said Tom Lane, a lobbyist for Iowa’s AEAs. “The site was designed to alleviate the frustration of finding contacts for services. When educators visit the site, they will find a point of contact at their respective AEA, and family members can reach out to mental health regions of MHDS.”

A listing of Iowa groups and agencies that advocate for children and families is part of an education component of the site, as well as reducing the stigma associated with mental health.

The site also provides information about proactive measures people can take for self-care.

“People who pay attention to their own physical and emotional health are better able to handle the challenges of supporting someone with mental health issues,” said Lane.

School employees are encouraged to check out the site, especially the “Find Support” page, in order to demonstrate how to navigate the resources. Schools should contact their local AEA for assistance with students who need mental health supports.

Iowa AEAs Bring Google Tech Support to Iowa District Partners

The Iowa AEA System has established a multi-year agreement to support Iowa school districts with access to and continued use of G Suite Enterprise for EDU (GSEfE) and Google Voice.

Effective immediately, any school district in Iowa can access the support services available through Tempus Nova (TN), a Google Cloud Premier Partner specializing in supporting educational organizations across the nation with their Google Cloud environments.

What This Partnership Means for Districts:
Reduced Pricing - Through this new agreement districts can upgrade from a G Suite for Education to a G Suite Enterprise for Education license at a significant savings. This agreement offers the upgrade for $41.28 per student, a reduction from the current MSRP of $48.00. This pricing discount of 14% offered by Tempus Nova is guaranteed for up to 5 years.

Additional Google Tech Support - This partnership brings additional support to your technology department and staff for Google products. Your district’s technology team can get support as they administer Gmail and Google Drive, manage domain-based challenges and recommendations, coordinate mobile device management, and provide district or building-wide Google resources.

Next Steps:
Your district’s technology director has received detailed information on the services available through Tempus Nova, and is encouraged to reach out to Tempus Nova to receive more information.
